The Effects Of Marijuana Use

One of the most commonly used illegal drugs in the United States, marijuana is considered by many to be a safe alternative to other drugs.  It is considered by many to be a gateway drug, opening up other narcotic options to the user as their own personal use increases.  There are many beneficial effects of marijuana, but research has shown that there are far more dangerous aspects of the drug.

Marijuana is typically either smoked or eaten.  When smoked, either in cigarette style joints or in a pipe, it creates a calm and euphoric high that can last 3 hours or more.  Eating marijuana, uses either in butter or baked good, make the effects last longer, although they may take longer to kick in.

Marijuana has both positive and negative effects.The Positive

While many groups focus all of their attention on the negative effects of the drug, many medical research studies have shown the positive qualities of marijuana when used in a controlled environment.  Marijuana has medical benefits.  It works wonders as a pain reliever.  Patients who may be undergoing treatment for serious medical issues, have a terminal condition, or glaucoma have benefited greatly from the use of medical marijuana.  In addition to being used in this manner, marijuana also has the benefit of being a hunger stimulant.  Those who have a poor diet or need to have additional weight gain can benefit greatly from the use of marijuana.  In addition to these, marijuana also works well as a stress reducer.  It allows people to relax during stressful periods if taken in controlled doses.

Most of the additional positive uses of marijuana you hear of are purely a matter of opinion and lack scientific backing.  Studies have shown that the drug effects different people differently.

The Negative

While marijuana does have some positive aspects, there are a slew of negative ones.  Many of the effects of marijuana come from abuse, and contrary to popular belief, it is addictive.  Smoking marijuana too much or for lengthy stretch of time can lead to negative consequences.  Delta-9-tetrahydrocannainol is the chemical substance in marijuana that creates the high.  This can have adverse mental and physical reactions that can lead to severe lifestyle issues.  Some of the many mental effects of the drugs can include;

  • An increased likelihood of developing anxiety, depression, suicidal mentalities, and schizophrenia.
  • Short-term and long-term memory issues.
  • Distorted perception.
  • Decreased motor skills.
  • Analytical thinking issues.
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability or unfounded aggression.

Along with the mental effects of marijuana, there are a slew of physical effects, which can include;

  • Increased chance of heart attacks, palpitations, and arrhythmias.
  • Increased change of respitory issues, such as chronic cough, difficulty breathing, and an increased chance of developing a lung infection.  There is no solid link between marijuana smoke and lung cancer as of this time.
  • Physical fatigue.
  • Lifestyle difficulty, including employment issues, social issues, and physical ability.
While marijuana is championed by many as being perfectly safe, there are several negative effects that they do not consider.
