Yeast infections can be very uncomfortable conditions. Yeast can be naturally found in the mouth and vagina, although not all women carry it. It is normal to have. Yeast infections mostly occur in females and about 75 percent of women will have one at some point in their lives.
Cause

Yeast infections are not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease. You do not have to be sexually active in order to develop a yeast infection. However, it is possible to transmit a yeast infection through sexual contact.

Symptoms
Symptoms of a yeast infection include vaginal itching, soreness and irritation. You may also experience a white or off-white, thick odorless discharge. You also may have pain during intercourse or during urination. Men who have a yeast infection may have patches of red sores at the end of the penis, itching, and burning. They may also experience a discharge.
Symptoms for a yeast infection are very similar to other conditions and you should see a doctor so they can determine whether it is something more serious. Some other conditions can include chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis, and gonorrhea. With more than 2.3 million people in the United States who have chlamydia, it is safe to be tested by a doctor before assuming you have just a yeast infection.
Treatment
When a patient attends the doctor, they will observe the vagina to see if the discharge is present. They will try to rule out other possible conditions that have similar symptoms. To do this, the doctor will take a sample and begin a culture. usually require a prescription to cure.
To treat the yeast infection, women may be prescribed a cream to apply to the vagina. This will be an antifungal treatment, or they will be prescribed yeast infection pills. Some medicines that you can take to clear up a yeast infection are Lotrimin, Mycelex, Monistat, Micatin, Terazol and Mycostatin. Oral yeast infection pills include Diflucan. Sometimes while taking yeast infection pills, patients can experience side effects such as headaches, abdominal pain and nausea.
